ACRL Press Conference on Lawsuit Against Car Dealership for Refusing to do business an Arab Muslim

Eyhab Aljabaly, a resident of Dearborn, Michigan, has filed a lawsuit in the Wayne County Circuit Court against a local car dealership, alleging discrimination based on his Arab Muslim background under the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.

Hawzah News Agency- Mr. Aljabaly’s lawsuit stems from an incident where he was denied service by a dealership employee after disclosing his Arab Muslim descent. According to the complaint, upon learning of Mr. Aljabaly’s identity, an employee named Jessica allegedly responded with the statement, "Oh, you're Muslim, end of conversation'', refusing to continue any further business with him.

The lawsuit, which brings attention to this act of discrimination, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Arab Muslim individuals in southeastern Michigan, especially in seemingly routine situations like purchasing or selling a vehicle. The case highlights the persistence of prejudice and bias in the region, as many members of the Arab Muslim community continue to face discrimination in both professional and social contexts.

Mr. Aljabaly stated in this regard: “I am deeply hurt by this blatant act of discrimination''. This case is not merely limited to my personal experience and rather, it is about addressing the harted and prejudices that remain deeply rooted in our society. I intend to draw public awareness to the fact that even in 2025, such issues persist in the most basic daily interactions.

The press conference, held on April 24, 2025, at the Arab American Civil Rights League (ACRL) conference room in Detroit, provided an opportunity for Mr. Aljabaly and civil rights leaders to discuss the case and its broader implications. During the press conference, the following key figures delivered speeches:

Mariam Charara, Executive Director of ACRL, stated, "This case serves as a painful reminder of the ongoing discrimination faced by Arab and Muslim communities in Michigan. We stand firmly with Mr. Aljabaly as he seeks justice. Discrimination should not be tolerated anywhere, especially in communities that pride themselves on diversity and inclusion''.

Nabih Ayad, Founder and Chairman of ACRL, expressed, “The Arab American Civil Rights League was established to fight against injustices like this. Eyhab’s case is not just about one individual; it reflects a systemic issue that affects many. Our work continues, and we will hold those who perpetuate discrimination accountable under the law''.

Eyhab Aljabaly, the plaintiff, shared his personal story, emphasizing how this experience impacted his sense of belonging in his own community. “Being denied service based on my faith and ethnicity is not just a personal affront, but a societal issue. I hope that this case serves as a reminder that discrimination in any form should be confronted and eradicated''.

This press conference served as a platform to raise awareness about the issue of discrimination in Michigan, particularly within the Arab Muslim community. The ACRL continues to support Mr. Aljabaly in his pursuit of justice and equality.
