Hawzah News Agency- Shaykh al‑Saduq narrated that his father narrated from Ahmad ibn Idris, from Muhammad ibn Ahmad, from Abdullah ibn Ahmad al‑Razi, from Bakr ibn Salih, from Isma’il ibn Mihran, from Muhammad ibn Hafs, from Ya’qub ibn Bashir, from Jabir, from Imam Baqir (pbuh), who said:

A man from Basra stood before the Commander of the Faithful (Imam Ali pbuh) and said:

“O Commander of the Faithful, tell us about brothers.”

- He said: “Brothers are of two kinds — brothers of trust and brothers of companionship:

1. As for the brothers of trust: they are your hands, your wings, your family, and your wealth. So when you are with your brother on the level of trust, give him your wealth and your strength; befriend those who befriend him, and disown those who oppose him; conceal his secret and his flaw, manifest his good traits. Know, O questioner, that such brothers are rarer than red sulfur.

2. And as for the brothers of companionship: you find your enjoyment with them — so do not cut this relation off, nor seek what lies beyond their outward cheerfulness; give them what they give you — a bright face and sweet speech.”
