Ammar Film Festival Secretary Says ‘Death to America’ Slogan Has Gone Global

The secretary of the 16th Ammar Popular Film Festival says the slogan “Death to America,” once largely confined to the Islamic Republic of Iran, has now taken on a global dimension as growing numbers of people worldwide voice opposition to what they describe as Washington’s oppressive and imperial policies.

In an interview with Hawzah News Agency in Tehran, Marzieh Hashemi pointed to what she described as a significant shift in global public opinion toward US foreign policy. She said that protests and acts of dissent are no longer limited to countries targeted by Washington, but are increasingly visible even within the United States itself.

“There was a time when this slogan was only heard in Iran,” Hashemi said. “Today, it is echoed across the world, and even inside the United States people are burning the American flag. This reflects a growing awareness of the true nature of US policies.”

She argued that people around the world have “awakened” to what she characterized as the injustice underlying American conduct on the global stage. According to Hashemi, even many Americans now understand that the slogan “Death to America” is directed not at ordinary citizens, but at the policies of US officials.

“When people chant this slogan, they are rejecting the oppressive policies of American leaders,” she said. “These are policies rooted in imperialist thinking that seek to dominate other nations and reduce them to subservience.”

Hashemi, an Iranian-American journalist and filmmaker, said she takes pride in living in the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as a society that stands in opposition to global injustice. She added that she hopes to witness the downfall of oppressive powers and the emergence of global justice under Imam Mahdi (may God hasten his reappearance), in line with Shiite beliefs.

The Ammar Film Festival secretary also reacted strongly to the insulting and provocative remarks by the US president against Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. She condemned the comments as disrespectful and inappropriate, stressing that US officials should refrain from making statements she said violate diplomatic norms and show disregard for religious and political sensitivities.

The Ammar Popular Film Festival, now in its 16th edition, is known for showcasing films and documentaries focused on social justice, resistance, and critical perspectives on Western political and cultural dominance.
