Gaza: A Modern Hiroshima — Pakistani Cleric Blasts Weaponization of Science

Hojatoleslam Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi, Chairman of the Shia Ulema Council of Pakistan, has warned that the Israeli onslaught on Gaza represents a modern-day repetition of the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki—this time executed through the misuse of advanced technology.

Hawzah News Agency- In a message marking World Science Day for Peace and Development, Naqvi condemned global powers for weaponizing scientific progress instead of directing it toward human welfare. He said that just as Hiroshima and Nagasaki once became “laboratories for deadly weapons,” Gaza today has turned into a battlefield where destructive capabilities are tested on defenseless civilians.

“Science and knowledge are like a surgical blade—beneficial in the hands of a healer, but deadly when wielded by criminals,” he said. “What should have helped humanity progress has instead become an instrument of oppression and bloodshed.”

Naqvi criticized the open support of colonial powers for the Israeli regime, saying they continue to use modern science and technology to intensify suffering in Gaza.
He added that while the world proudly speaks of peace and development, “the skies of Gaza are darkened by bombardment, children and women are pulled from under rubble, and even humanitarian aid is blocked.”

The senior Pakistani cleric said Gaza has become “a new victim and a testing ground for a new generation of destructive weapons,” calling it a stark reminder of the moral failures of the international community.

He also highlighted the contradiction of commemorating Science Day amid the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe:
“On a day dedicated to peace and development, Gaza remains under siege, hunger is weaponized, and justice is drowned out by the political interests of powerful states.”

World Science Day for Peace and Development, observed every year on November 10, was established by UNESCO to promote scientific awareness, strengthen research culture, and highlight the essential role of science in sustainable development and global peace.
