Qom Seminary Professor Highlights Legacy of Sheikh Mufid as a Model of Scholarship

Hojatoleslam Ruhollah Foroughi, a professor at Qom Seminary, has described Sheikh Mufid as a comprehensive and exemplary figure in Islamic scholarship, emphasizing his role as the founder of the Baghdad school that harmonized rationalism and transmissionism.

In an interview with Hawzah News Agency, Foroughi highlighted the importance of familiarizing students with the lives of great Islamic scholars, noting that Sheikh Mufid excelled in theology, jurisprudence, debate, and the defense of Imami beliefs. “He combined deep knowledge with humility, patience, and a commitment to teaching,” he said, adding that Sheikh Mufid authored over two hundred works and trained a generation of influential scholars.

Hojatoleslam Foroughi further recalled accounts of Sheikh Mufid’s ascetic lifestyle, dedication to prayer, and tireless pursuit of knowledge, noting that he personally nurtured talented students, often seeking out gifted children to educate them. Despite living in a politically challenging era dominated by the Mu’tazilites, Sheikh Mufid remained patient, articulate, and committed to intellectual rigor.

“Sheikh Mufid’s life and teachings demonstrate that scholarship, devotion, and moral integrity are inseparable,” Foroughi said. “Even under hardship, he prioritized learning and education above all else, leaving a lasting legacy for Shiite seminaries and the Muslim world.”
