Spain slams Israel’s UNRWA ban, says it puts ceasefire deal in danger

The Spanish government strongly rejected Israel’s decision to ban the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and called on Tel Aviv to revoke the measure immediately.

Hawzah news Agency- The ban, which took effect on Thursday, prohibits UNRWA from operating within the occupied West Bank.

Spain’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing deep concern over the devastating consequences of Israel’s decision, warning that it endangers both humanitarian efforts and the fragile ceasefire in Gaza.

“Spain expresses its deepest concern about the impact that this decision will have on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories, putting at risk the ceasefire,” the statement read.

Despite the ban, UNRWA reaffirmed its commitment to continue providing life-saving aid, announcing via its official X account that its clinics remain operational throughout the occupied West Bank, including East al-Quds. In East al-Quds alone, UNRWA delivers healthcare services to approximately 70,000 Palestinian refugees and provides education for around 1,000 students.

The agency also revealed that it has yet to receive any formal notification regarding how Israel intends to enforce the ban, but it warned that the move threatens critical humanitarian assistance, including healthcare and education, for millions of Palestinian refugees.

Spain emphasized that UNRWA is “essential” and “irreplaceable,” underscoring the agency’s crucial role in supporting nearly six million Palestinian refugees.
