Hawzah News Agency- The call was made during a press briefing held in Jos, Plateau State, to mark the commencement of the 10-day global Ashura commemoration in honour of Imam Hussaini (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).
Activities lined up for this year’s Ashura include prayer sessions, religious lectures, and large processions across different parts of the country, as followers reflect on the enduring values of sacrifice, justice, and resilience in the face of oppression.
Speaking at Zakzaky Hall, Anguwan Rogo, Jos, Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Gangare expressed concern over the rising wave of banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, noting that women, schoolchildren, and vulnerable citizens continue to face increasing threats.
Sheikh Gangare stated that the sacrifice made at Karbala demonstrates that lasting change requires courage, patience, and steadfastness, especially during difficult times.
He further noted that many Nigerians are facing severe hardship due to inflation and the rising cost of living, stressing that the lessons of perseverance from Karbala offer hope and strength to people enduring hardship.
The cleric also compared victims of terrorism and violent conflicts in Nigeria to those who suffered during the tragedy of Karbala.
Ashura, observed on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussaini in 680 AD during the Battle of Karbala. The occasion is marked worldwide with mourning gatherings, prayers, and elegiac recitations.
The Sheikh reaffirmed Imam Hussaini’s unwavering stand for justice, emphasizing that his struggle was rooted not in hatred or oppression, but in the pursuit of societal reform and the fight against injustice.
The group also urged federal and state governments to intensify efforts toward rescuing abducted schoolchildren, ending terrorism, and ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity in economic management and security administration.
According to the Sheikh, Imam Hussaini’s message remains highly relevant to Nigeria’s current challenges, calling on leaders and citizens to embrace truth, justice, accountability, and meaningful reforms in tackling corruption, economic hardship, and governance failures.
