Iran’s Foreign Ministry Taps Seminary Expertise to Tackle Global Crises, Foster Islamic Unity

Qom- The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized the critical role of seminaries in shaping international discourse and strengthening Islamic unity, underlining the longstanding partnership between the country’s diplomatic apparatus and religious institutions in addressing regional and global challenges.

In an interview with Hawzah News Agency, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaili Baghaei stressed that seminaries—particularly the Qom Seminary—have long been pivotal in generating knowledge in key areas such as international relations, political thought, Islamic jurisprudence, human rights, and humanitarian law.

“The relationship between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the seminaries has a deep-rooted and productive history,” Baghaei said. “Our diplomatic system has consistently drawn upon the scholarly and jurisprudential insights of seminary scholars, especially in navigating complex international crises and articulating the discourse of the Islamic Revolution.”

Baghaei pointed to the establishment of a joint committee between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the seminary, initiated by the late Foreign Minister Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, as a notable development in recent years. He noted that this body has been instrumental in addressing issues related to human rights, humanitarian law, and conceptual challenges in foreign policy.

He underscored the seminaries’ potential in facilitating interfaith dialogue and promoting engagement among followers of different religions and civilizations. “Institutions like Al-Mustafa International University and other centers involved in international religious outreach can serve as important platforms for countering misinformation and enhancing Iran’s global image,” he added.

Baghaei emphasized that the seminaries’ emphasis on unity and constructive dialogue can play a decisive role in resolving intra-Islamic disputes and fostering solidarity among Muslim nations. “Through shared values and scholarly cooperation, we can help mitigate misunderstandings and foster stronger bonds among Islamic countries,” he said.

Referring to the ongoing tragedies in Palestine, Gaza, and the West Bank, Baghaei said such crises are not merely regional but represent “a dark stain on the conscience of humanity.” He noted that cooperation between the religious and diplomatic sectors is vital in mobilizing global awareness and solidarity in defense of oppressed peoples.

“Our moral and strategic responsibilities as part of the global Muslim community are growing heavier in the face of such calamities,” he said.

During a recent visit to Qom, Baghaei met with prominent scholars and administrators from the Qom Seminary, including Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani. Describing the meetings as fruitful, he expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s regional office for arranging the discussions.

“These consultations are instrumental in expanding strategic cooperation between our foreign policy apparatus and the country’s religious intellectual centers,” he said. “Such partnerships not only support our diplomatic objectives but also enhance the articulation of Iran’s values and worldview on the international stage.”
