Iraqi Academic: Islamic Resistance Rooted in the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Exemplary Leadership

The president of Iraq’s Ilia University has emphasized that the path of Islamic resistance can only be sustained through steadfast adherence to the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), stressing that the younger generation must draw spiritual and social guidance from the lives of martyrs and resistance leaders.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking on Wednesday at the international scientific conference titled “Martyr Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah: The Secret of Resistance and the Genius of Leadership,” held at Razavi University of Islamic Sciences, Sheikh Ghalib Abdul Hussein Naima highlighted the central role of divine guidance in confronting oppression and safeguarding Islamic values.

Sheikh Naima underlined the pivotal position of the Prophet’s Household (Ahl al-Bayt), noting that throughout Islamic history, the preservation of religious values and the guidance of Muslim society have been realized through the presence and leadership of the infallible Imams. He said the Qur’an and the Sunnah have consistently inspired believers and leaders, forming the intellectual and spiritual foundation of resistance movements against tyranny, injustice, and corruption.

Referring to the role of Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (peace be upon him) and other infallible Imams, the Iraqi academic noted that humanity’s spiritual growth has always been intertwined with divine leadership. “Divine blessings and guidance continue along this path,” he said, “as long as societies remain committed to the principles laid down by God and His chosen leaders.”

Addressing contemporary examples of resistance, Sheikh Naima pointed to the late martyr General Qassem Soleimani and martyr Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah as outstanding symbols of courage, insight, and leadership. He said these figures embodied the Qur’anic model of resistance and were able to confront aggression and hegemony by relying on faith, moral clarity, and strategic wisdom.

He warned that success on the path of resistance is inseparable from commitment to divine values, adding that negligence, deviation, or miscalculation can impose heavy costs on Islamic societies. “Resistance without moral and spiritual foundations risks losing its direction and purpose,” he stressed.

The president of Ilia University also underscored the importance of historical awareness, urging the younger generation to study the lives and struggles of martyrs and leaders carefully. According to him, a deep understanding of history, combined with adherence to moral and religious teachings and close engagement with the Qur’an, can immunize societies against internal discord and external conspiracies.

Sheikh Naima further highlighted the role of knowledge and education in strengthening faith and resistance, noting that universities, professors, and teachers bear a critical responsibility in transmitting authentic religious and ethical values. “Science, when accompanied by faith, empowers individuals to distinguish truth from falsehood and to act with insight rather than blind imitation,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Sheikh Naima stressed the continuity of the resistance movement and the necessity of correct guidance for society. He said that following the example of martyrs and resistance leaders—particularly martyr Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah—can illuminate the path of spiritual and social development for the youth and ensure the endurance of Islamic resistance movements across the world.

He added that inspiration drawn from the sacrifice, bravery, and insight of these figures can help Islamic societies remain resilient, principled, and steadfast in the face of ongoing challenges.
