Hawzah News Agency-Roughly a dozen Anti-Islam protesters in Houston, Texas were vastly outnumbered by about 60 counter-protesters demonstrating in solidarity with Texas' Muslims at a rally Saturday.
The anti-Islam protesters wore shirts bearing white supremacist images, and even screamed "White Power!"
The counter-protesters held banners that read "Allah Lives Matter" and one that encouraged the supremacists to "follow their leader," Adolf Hitler, in committing suicide.
Local police kept the two groups separated on either side of the street.
A group calling itself "Heart of Texas" organized the protest outside Houston's Islamic Da'Wah Center. The group wrote on the event page: “Imagine Texas turning in a muslim [sic] ghetto full of mosques and ‘Islamic Knowledge’ centers. It’s gettin’ real.
“That’s right, just days after sharia law was banned in Texas," the post continued. "The library reportedly cost around US$2.5 million. Imagine how much our tax money went to building this shrine to hatred."
The Da'Wah Center was privately funded.
The Heart of Texas group not only posts anti-Muslim events, but also banners encouraging Texans to support Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. They also encouraged attendees to bring firearms to the rally. Only one man did so.
Rachel Schneider-Vlachos, a doctoral student in religion at Houston's Rice University told the Chronicle it's important to show the Muslim community that people in Houston are willing to stand with them.
"There are people here who are willing to say Muslim lives matter, and we love our Muslim neighbors," she said.
Texas has a history of rallies against Islamic centers. However, anti-Muslim groups are greatly often outnumbered by Texans showing solidarity with their Islamic statesmen.
