How to react when students imitate western fashions?

I am a teacher in a secondary school. I see too many students imitating western fashions in their clothing. What is the reason for this difficulty and what is the solution?

Hawzah News Agency - Question: I am a teacher in a secondary school. I see too many students imitating western fashions in their clothing. What is the reason for this difficulty and what is the solution?

Answer:

There are many reasons behind this problem:

1. Lack of awareness of inspiring Islamic role models, which are far superior alternatives to imported foreign examples.

2. The spread of Western culture and fashion in our societies through the media — including films, images, ideas, and advertisements — a phenomenon often described as cultural colonialism or intellectual subordination.

3. Weak Islamic media, which fails to present a beautiful and appealing image of Muslim youth as Allah, the All-Wise Creator, has intended.

4. Weak educational programs in schools, which lack the true intellectual essence of religion.
Religious studies are often taught in a shallow and uninspiring way, largely because many teachers treat them as mere official duties rather than a sincere religious mission. As a result, students are not motivated to engage with religion meaningfully.

5. The home environment, which may include practices contrary to Islamic teachings.
This has a strong influence on young people, leading them to imitate foreign fashions and negative role models and to occupy themselves with trivial and unproductive pastimes.

The solution lies in collective action. Individuals, families, and society as a whole must respond in ways that directly oppose these causes. All must work together to guide the youth and make them aware of the harms of blindly imitating foreign cultures.

One effective method is to present documented statistics from Western media themselves, which reveal high levels of crime, social problems, emotional distress, and suicide in those societies.
