Ayatollah Javadi Amoli: Imam Khomeini Was a Distinguished Jurist, Gnostic, and Philosopher

Senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli has described the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, as an exceptional figure who combined jurisprudential mastery with profound spiritual and philosophical insight.

Hawzah News Agency- In remarks cited by local sources, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli said Imam Khomeini was not only a prominent authority in practical jurisprudence, but also an eminent figure in fiqh al-akbar — a term traditionally associated with theology, spiritual knowledge, and higher metaphysical understanding.

Referring to Imam Khomeini as “the Malik al-Ashtar of our era,” Ayatollah Javadi Amoli drew a parallel between the late leader of the Islamic Revolution and the loyal companion of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), who is revered in Islamic history as a symbol of courage, justice, and unwavering devotion to divine governance.

“The man who embodied the spirit of Malik al-Ashtar in our time and revived the command and path of the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), was the great and noble leader of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini,” he stated.

Ayatollah Javadi Amoli emphasized that Imam Khomeini played a pivotal role in reviving both the legal rulings (ahkam) and the deeper wisdom (hikam) of Islam. He noted that the Imam’s intellectual and spiritual stature was evident decades before the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

He pointed in particular to Imam Khomeini’s early work, Misbah al-Hidayah ila al-Khilafah wa al-Wilayah (The Lamp of Guidance to the Caliphate and Guardianship), written when he was around 30 years old. According to Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, the treatise is replete with profound mystical insights that transcend conventional philosophical discourse.

“It is remarkable,” he said, “how this divine man, at such a young age, comprehended such elevated metaphysical realities and found within himself the authority to articulate them in writing.”

Highlighting the multidimensional character of the late Imam, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli stated that his scholarly authority was not confined to jurisprudence in its technical sense. Rather, Imam Khomeini was simultaneously a leading jurist of the Imami tradition, a gnostic deeply immersed in Islamic mysticism, and a philosopher engaged with the highest levels of intellectual inquiry.

Quoting the Quranic phrase, “That is the grace of God; He grants it to whom He wills,” Ayatollah Javadi Amoli described Imam Khomeini’s intellectual and spiritual gifts as divinely bestowed.

The senior cleric’s remarks underscore a recurring theme in Iranian religious discourse: that the Islamic Revolution was not merely a political transformation, but the manifestation of a comprehensive religious vision rooted in jurisprudence, spirituality, and philosophy.

More than four decades after the Revolution, Imam Khomeini continues to be portrayed by leading scholars as a figure whose legacy extends beyond political leadership — encompassing theological renewal, ethical revival, and what supporters describe as the reassertion of religion as a guiding force in both society and governance.
