Hawzah News Agency – The Holy Qur’an speaks about the path to salvation for believers from sorrow and affliction, stating:
“And [remember] the Man of the Fish, when he left in a rage, thinking that We would not put him to hardship. Then he cried out in the darkness, ‘There is no god except You! You are immaculate! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers!’.” (Surah Al-Anbiya', 21:87)
Explanation:
Some people, during the afflictions, problems, and sorrows of life, blame God! This very tendency may cause them to distance themselves from Almighty God and abandon their religious obligations.
Yes, every affliction and calamity that befalls us occurs with Divine permission:
“No affliction visits [anyone] except by Allah’s leave.” (Surah Al-Taqabun, 64:11)
However, the primary cause and originator of that calamity and affliction is not God, but rather ourselves:
“Whatever affliction that may visit you is because of what your hands have earned, and He excuses many [an offense of yours].” (Surah Al-Shura, 42:30)
It is for this reason that Prophet Jonah, peace be upon him, while inside the belly of the fish, addressed Almighty God in this manner: “You are immaculate! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers.”
And truly, reaching and confessing this very truth—attributing all good things to the Almighty God and regarding all shortcomings as stemming from ourselves—is what can liberate a person from the darknesses and hardships of worldly life. As the Holy Qur’an has also pointed to this very truth:
"Whatever good befalls you is from Allah; and whatever ill befalls you is from yourself." (Surah Al-Nisa', 4:79)
