Seminary Official Stresses Need for Islamic-Based Counseling to Serve Society

Hojatoleslam Hamid Maleki, acting director of the Qom Seminary, emphasized that counseling based on Western scientific frameworks is insufficient to meet the needs of an Islamic society. Speaking at the Samah Center Advisors’ Meeting, he highlighted the necessity of relying on divine guidance and Islamic sciences to address social and psychological challenges.

Hawzah News Agency- Addressing the national meeting of managers, technical officials, and admissions officers of Samah counseling centers at Dar al-Shifa High School in Qom, Maleki pointed to the quantitative and qualitative growth of specialized fields within the seminaries. “Today, the seminary is fully equipped to respond to contemporary doubts in all areas, and this progress in Qom is truly a blessed achievement,” he said.

Expansion of Disciplines and Academic Reach

The acting director noted that seminaries now offer over 100 disciplines and orientations, including psychology and counseling, supported by a membership of 4,000 to 5,000 within the scientific association. He added that, according to the Iranian Supreme Leader, a successful seminary is not merely one that leads in reputation but one that actively advances toward the goals set by the leadership.

Integrating Human Sciences with Divine Teachings

Maleki underscored the importance of integrating psychological sciences with Islamic teachings, citing verse 29 of Surah Al-Anfal. “Counselors should benefit from human scientific knowledge while ensuring that Islamic and Quranic principles guide the counseling process,” he said.

Referring to the methodology of Martyr Morteza Motahari (RA), he noted that although Motahari was not fluent in English, he studied Western philosophical works in translation and gained a profound understanding of their theories. “He interpreted Kant with greater depth than many Western scholars and analyzed Marxist and Leninist ideas more thoroughly,” Maleki stated.

He concluded by stressing the importance of continuously updating scholarly knowledge. “It is essential for a cleric entering any scientific field to maintain up-to-date expertise,” he said.
