O God! Look Upon Me with Love

Truly, the lovers of this world must sit humbly and learn in the school of love taught by Imam al‑Sajjad (peace be upon him), so that they may adorn and perfume themselves with divine color and fragrance — that is, with true love; a love before which all other loves fade away.

Hawzah News Agency | In Sahifah al‑Sajjadiyyah, Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, prays to the Almighty God as follows:

«وَ انْظُرْ إِلَیَّ وَ انْظُرْ لِی فِی جَمِیعِ أُمُورِی فَإِنَّکَ إِنْ وَکَلْتَنِی إِلَی نَفْسِی عَجَزْتُ عَنْهَا.»

“O Lord! Look upon me and keep watch over all my deeds, for if You leave me to myself, I will be powerless to perform my works.” (Supplication no. 22)

Explanation:

To better understand the words of Imam al‑Sajjad, peace be upon him, let us turn to his Supplication of "The Lovers" (Munajāt al‑Muhibbīn)1.

In this heartfelt and intimate prayer, the Imam addresses Almighty God, saying:

«وَامْنُنْ بِالنَّظَرِ إِلَیْکَ عَلَیَّ، وَانْظُرْ بِعَیْنِ الْوُدِّ وَالْعَطْفِ إِلَیَّ، وَلَا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّی وَجْهَکَ.»

“O Lord! Bestow upon me the grace of beholding the beauty of Your existence, look upon me with eyes of love and compassion, and never turn away from me.”

How beautiful and touching these words are!

“O Lord! Enable me to look toward You, and may You constantly gaze upon me with a loving and merciful glance, never turning away from me — for should You deprive me, even for a moment, of that gaze filled with affection and tenderness, should You leave me to myself even for an instant, I would become powerless and helpless.”

Indeed, the lovers of this world and all who claim affection and love must sit humbly and learn in the school of love taught by Imam al‑Sajjad, peace be upon him, in order to adorn themselves with Divine color and fragrance.

Yet, these words of Imam al‑Sajjad, peace be upon him, may also be viewed from another perspective.

When we implore the Almighty to constantly look upon us and never turn His gaze away, it implies that we are always in His sacred presence and never separated from His sight.

Thus, we must continually uphold the etiquette of servitude, showing ourselves worthy of His look.

Let not a word or deed emerge from us that would cause the loving gaze of that True Beloved to turn away. For to be deprived of that gaze — even for the blink of an eye — is the greatest loss for the lover.
