Qur’anic Warning for People of Cyberspace

In Islam, any word or deed that leads to the spread of sin and immorality within society is condemned. This is because such actions cause the ugliness and disgrace of sin to fade in the eyes of many people, turning it gradually into something ordinary and acceptable in the community.

Hawzah News Agency | The act of promoting indecency is among the sins that are severely denounced. The Holy Qur’an declares:

“Indeed those who want indecency to spread among the faithful—there is a painful punishment for them in the world and the Hereafter, and Allah knows and you do not know.” (Nur - 24 / 19)

Explanation:

In Islam, any type of speech or behavior that results in the dissemination of sin or corruption in society is censured, for it breaks the moral barrier against wrongdoing and normalizes corruption among the people.

The following narration reveals the sensitivity and gravity of this matter:

A man once came to Imam Musa al‑Kazim, peace be upon him, and said:

“May I be your sacrifice! I have heard news about one of my brothers that is not befitting of him. When I asked him about it, he denied it—though a trustworthy group had informed me.”

The Imam, peace be upon him, replied:

“O Muhammad! Disbelieve your eyes and ears in regard to your brother. Even if fifty people swear and testify against him, yet he himself denies it—believe him and deny them.

You must not disclose anything that may cause him disgrace or harm his reputation, for by doing so you would become one of those about whom God has said:

‘Indeed those who want indecency to spread among the faithful—there is a painful punishment for them in the world and the Hereafter.’”

(Wasa'il al-Shia, v. 12, p. 295)

Just as fanning a fire makes it burn and spread more intensely, so too does fueling sin and disobedience—anything that opposes the pleasure of Almighty God—lead to its expansion across society and even the world (particularly with modern means of communication). Consequently, besides disgracing and defaming the individuals involved, many others who had no prior inclination toward such sins become familiar with them, and perhaps even commit them. Ultimately, society drifts toward corruption and destruction.

For this reason, Imam Ali, peace be upon him, warns us:

“The one who spread indecency is just like the one who commits them.” (Ghurar al-Hikam, v. 1. p. 704)

Given these Qur’anic verses and narrations—one is compelled to ask: What is truly happening today in our Cyberspace?!!
