Hawzah News Agency | Imam Alī, peace be upon him, in Nahj al-Balāghah, addresses Abū Dharr in these words:
«لَا یُؤْنِسَنَّکَ إِلَّا الْحَقُّ وَ لَا یُوحِشَنَّکَ إِلَّا الْبَاطِلُ.»
"Let nothing but truth bring you peace, and let nothing but falsehood cause you fear.” (Wisdom, no. 130)
Explanation:
To revolve one’s life around "truth" and to make it the center of one’s existence is one of the teachings that Islam — and especially the words of the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali, peace be upon him — strongly emphasize.
A person, as long as "truth" is with him, claims to uphold truth and justice, for his interest lies in the establishment of truth. But once truth stands against him, he no longer wishes to speak of it, and may even act contrary to it.
For this reason, the Noble Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, also says to Abū Dharr:
«اَلْحَقُّ ثَقِیلٌ مُرٌّ وَ اَلْبَاطِلُ خَفِیفٌ حُلْوٌ.»
“Truth is heavy and bitter, while falsehood is light and sweet.” (Bihar al-Anwar, v. 74, p. 73)
Therefore, Imam Alī, peace be upon him, extends his fatherly advice to us, saying:
«اِصْبِرْ عَلَی مَضَضِ مَرَارَةِ اَلْحَقِّ وَ إِیَّاکَ أَنْ تَنْخَدِعَ لِحَلاَوَةِ اَلْبَاطِلِ.»
“Endure the bitterness of truth, and beware of being deceived by the sweetness of falsehood.” (Ghurar al-Hikam, v. 1, p. 149)
For indeed — according to religious teachings — the path of truth is the path to Paradise, while the path of falsehood leads to Hell. And let us not forget that at the head of every path stands a caller; thus, we must take the counsel of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, as the lamp that lights our way.
Moreover, what can strengthen and encourage the followers of truth and righteousness is the promise of Imam Alī, peace be upon him, who said:
«قَلِیلُ اَلْحَقِّ یَدْفَعُ کَثِیرَ اَلْبَاطِلِ کَمَا أَنَّ اَلْقَلِیلَ مِنَ اَلنَّارِ یُحْرِقُ کَثِیرَ اَلْحَطَبِ.»
“A little truth destroys much falsehood, just as a small fire burns a great deal of wood.” (Ghurar al-Hikam, v. 1, p. 498)
