Imam Reza (AS) and the Art of Turning Threats into Opportunities

On the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), Hojatoleslam Ruhollah Shirmahd highlighted the strategies of the Eighth Shia Imam in countering the plots of the Abbasid rulers, stressing that his wisdom in transforming threats into opportunities remains a vital lesson for today’s society.

Speaking to Hawzah News Agency, the director of the Imam Musa ibn Ja’far (AS) Fiqh and Research School said that the Abbasid period was marked by combined political, cultural, and cognitive warfare against the Ahl al-Bayt (AS). He noted that Imam Reza (AS), despite pressures and restrictions, used the same tools employed by the enemy to propagate pure Islamic teachings and prevent the isolation of the Shiite school.

“Through debates, dialogues, and even under pressure to assume political positions, Imam Reza (AS) safeguarded the dignity of the Imamate and turned the Abbasid court’s schemes into a platform for strengthening Islam,” Shirmahd said.

He underlined that the Imam’s approach neutralized the Abbasid attempts to undermine the Imamate, ensuring that the principles of truth and justice became more visible to the Islamic world.

Citing the statements of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, he added that Imam Reza’s (AS) response to Ma’mun’s political maneuver was a divinely guided plan that not only foiled the caliph’s objectives but also expanded the reach of Qur’anic and Ahl al-Bayt teachings.

“This chapter of history shows that with reliance on God and wisdom, hostile plots can be redirected toward advancing divine goals,” the seminary professor said.

Shirmahd stressed that today’s Islamic societies can learn from this legacy to stand firm against combined enemy warfare and present the message of pure Islam to the world.
