Hawzah News Agency- Muhammad ibn Yahya, narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from Abu Hamza, who said:
سأل نافع بن الأزرق أبا جعفر (عَلَيهِ السَّلَامُ) فقال: أخبرني عن اللّه متى كان؟
فقال: متى لم يكن حتى أخبرك متى كان، سبحان من لم يزل ولا يزال فرداً صمداً لم يتّخذ صاحبة ولا ولداً.
"Nafi' ibn al-Azraq asked Abu Ja'far[Imam Baqer] (pbuh): Tell me when did Allah exist?
He responded: [Tell me] when did Allah not exist so that I tell you when He existed? [1] Glory be to He who has always been and will always be, The Unique and Self-Sufficient, [and] does not have a wife or children."
[1]: "It means that everything that can be asked about the time of its existence can also be asked about the time of its nonexistence, because a thing does not fall under the category of time by its existence alone..." al-Mazandarani 144/3.
[Both existence and nonexistence may be questioned of their time, because necessarily before and after the time of existence is nonexistence]
