Spain publishes its first national guide to combat Islamophobia

In a pioneering move, the Spanish government has released its first national guide to counter Islamophobia—the first initiative of its kind in Europe—aimed at addressing misinformation about Islam and Muslims while combating hate speech and racism, particularly against Muslim migrants, in public discourse and on social media.

Hawzah News Agency- Drawing on official data, the guide challenges common economic and social myths surrounding Muslim migrants. It notes that foreign residents contribute about 10 percent of Spain’s social security revenue while accounting for only 1 percent of public spending. On average, migrants generate a net annual benefit of €1,600 for the government, with public expenditure on them 32 percent lower than on Spanish citizens.

The guide also highlights that migrants’ economic participation rate stands at 69.3 percent, compared to 56.4 percent among locals, underscoring their essential role in key sectors such as agriculture, construction, and tourism. It further reports that over 600,000 anti-Muslim posts were recorded online during the first eight months of 2025, while 31 percent of Muslims in Spain have faced discrimination—most frequently in housing.

Rejecting unfounded claims about the so-called “Islamization” of society, the document emphasizes that Muslims represent only about 2 percent of Spain’s population. Muslim organizations have welcomed the Spanish government’s initiative, describing it as a model for promoting coexistence and calling on other European nations to adopt similar policies.
