Hawzah News Agency- Speaking at a Quran interpretation gathering held Wednesday at the Imam Khomeini Grand Prayer Hall in Qom, Hojatoleslam Ruhollah Rassel pointed to the anniversary of the August 19, 1953 coup d'état in Iran, describing it as one of the most significant events in the country's contemporary history.
He emphasized that one of the key lessons of historical events for the Islamic community is maintaining insight, recognizing the enemy, and refraining from trusting enemies with a clear record of hostility toward nations and their independence.
"This incident demonstrated that trusting America and Britain cannot serve as a foundation for the dignity and independence of the Iranian nation," he stated.
The seminary scholar, referring to the movement to nationalize Iran's oil industry, said: "After the Iranian nation's efforts to nationalize the oil industry and the rise of the Mosaddegh government, America carried out a coup that toppled the country's legitimate government and paved the way for the return of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to Iran."
He continued: "Ayatollah Kashani had warned against trusting America before the coup, but this warning was ignored, and the result of trusting America proved costly for both the government of the time and the Iranian nation."
The Quranic exegesis expert noted that American hostility toward the Iranian nation began years before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, stating: "The history of American enmity toward Iran should not be considered as starting from the revolution. The August 19 coup was one of the clearest examples of American interference in the country's internal affairs and its attempt to change Iran's political structure."
Rassel, pointing to events in the years following the revolution, said: "The enemies of the Islamic Republic have attempted at various junctures to weaken the Islamic system through instigating unrest and instability, but the presence and vigilance of the people have prevented them from achieving their objectives."
Turning to the opening verses of Surah Al-Mumtahanah, he described them as containing teachings on how believers should confront enemies, saying: "In these verses, God warns believers against establishing friendly relations with and relying upon the enemies of God and the enemies of the Islamic community, providing clear reasons for this prohibition."
Referring to the first verse of Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Rassel added: "The Holy Quran reminds us that the enemies do not believe in the truth that has come to the believers, and they have shown hostility toward Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the believers because of their faith. Therefore, enemy claims of friendship with the people and their alleged goodwill must be examined with precision and vigilance."
He further noted that the American government's track record in various countries must also be taken into account, stating: "Contemporary history shows that America has entered many countries claiming to support their people, but the outcome of its policies in multiple cases has been war, destruction, and instability."
The Quranic exegesis expert, citing further verses from Surah Al-Mumtahanah, said: "The Holy Quran calls on believers to take Prophet Abraham (AS) and his companions as their role models — those who drew clear boundaries against the enemies of monotheism and stood firm on their principles and faith."
In conclusion, Hojatoleslam Rassel stressed the necessity of drawing lessons from history and the teachings of the Holy Quran, stating: "One of the key lessons of historical events for the Islamic community is maintaining insight, recognizing the enemy, and refraining from trusting enemies who have a clear record of hostility toward nations and their independence."
