Knowledge Must Transcend Materialism and Serve Human Excellence, Says Cleric

The representative of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in East Azerbaijan Province has emphasized that an Islamic university differs fundamentally from other academic institutions in its approach to knowledge, stating that if science is confined within material boundaries, it will fail to address humanity's moral and spiritual needs.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Islamic Azad University in East Azerbaijan Province, Hojatoleslam Ahmad Motahhari-Asl underscored the elevated status of knowledge in religious teachings, saying: "Knowledge is a divine gift, and humanity must move beyond a purely materialistic outlook in the pursuit of learning."

Science Cannot Be Confined to Materialism

Citing Quranic verses on knowledge, he stated: "God introduces Himself in the Quran as humanity's teacher, and this demonstrates the greatness of knowledge and the elevated position of human beings in the order of creation."

Motahhari-Asl added: "If knowledge is confined solely within the framework of materialism, many human, ethical, and spiritual questions will remain unanswered."

The Friday Prayer leader of Tabriz called on universities to adopt a deeper perspective on knowledge and wisdom, stating: "The difference between an Islamic university and other academic centers is that it views knowledge as a divine gift and defines human dignity beyond the material realm."

He warned: "Ignoring the spiritual and moral dimensions of humanity will lead to the decline of both human and scientific values."

Quality Education and Student Welfare

Motahhari-Asl stressed the necessity of precise and comprehensive education in universities and seminaries, saying: "Students and seminarians must benefit fully from their education, and professors must not fall short in delivering complete instruction."

He added: "Universities, particularly Islamic Azad University, are expected to avoid haste and superficiality in the pursuit of academic excellence."

Addressing financial issues facing universities, the Leader's representative stated: "Financial pressures must not be placed on the shoulders of students. It is necessary to utilize existing capacities and resources to address university financial challenges through other means."

He emphasized: "Students should remain focused on their studies and academic advancement, and must not be subjected to unnecessary pressures."

Praising Islamic Azad University's Role

Motahhari-Asl expressed appreciation for the efforts of officials, professors, and staff of Islamic Azad University, describing the institution as one of the country's most important scientific assets.

"Islamic Azad University, particularly since 2001, has played an effective role in advancing the country's scientific standing and has delivered skilled and competent professionals to society in various fields," he said.
