Hawzah News Agency- Speaking on the sidelines of the International Quran Exhibition, Yemeni scholar Essam al-Emad underscored the central role of Islamic seminaries in preserving and promoting Quranic teachings in contemporary society.
Seminaries as Guardians of Qur’anic Knowledge
Al-Emad emphasized that Shiite seminaries have historically been built upon a deep engagement with the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet’s Household.
He noted that from their inception, these institutions have sought not only to transmit religious knowledge but to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the Qur’an through interpretation, jurisprudence, and theological reflection.
According to the scholar, the teachings of figures such as Imam Ali (PBUH), Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, and Muhammad al-Baqir (PBUT) have consistently drawn upon Qur’anic foundations — demonstrating the inseparable relationship between scriptural revelation and its lived interpretation.
In this framework, the intellectual legacy of the Prophet’s family is viewed not as separate from the Qur’an, but as an extension and clarification of its message.
A Living Tradition
Al-Emad argued that seminaries play a vital role in ensuring that the Qur’an remains a living source of ethical and spiritual guidance.
Through education, scholarship, and public engagement, these institutions help sustain a culture rooted in divine principles — from theology and law to social ethics and metaphysical understanding.
Rising Incidents of Qur’an Desecration
Turning to recent acts of Qur’an desecration in parts of the West, the scholar described such incidents as deliberate attempts to undermine a central pillar of Islamic belief.
However, he maintained that these actions ultimately transcend Islam itself.
“Insulting the Qur’an,” he suggested, “is effectively an affront to all faith traditions grounded in divine revelation.”
He argued that throughout history, opponents of Islam have sought to discredit the Qur’an — whether through ridicule, misrepresentation, or symbolic acts of hostility.
In contemporary settings, such acts often manifest in public provocations that aim to inflame tensions and erode respect for religious values.
A Broader Implication
Al-Emad asserted that hostility toward sacred texts reflects not only ignorance, but also a deeper rejection of transcendental moral authority.
From his perspective, acceptance of divine scripture is inseparable from belief in God — and dismissing revelation inevitably leads to a broader erosion of ethical accountability.
The Need for Dialogue and Respect
Concluding his remarks, the scholar called for greater global awareness of the consequences of religious disrespect.
He stressed that safeguarding the dignity of sacred symbols is essential for fostering peaceful coexistence in pluralistic societies.
In his view, attacks on the Qur’an should be recognized not simply as isolated provocations, but as part of a wider challenge confronting the moral fabric of an increasingly polarized world.
