Hawzah News Agency- According to Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the strong turnout reflects growing interest in Arabic calligraphy as a vital art form for conveying the Holy Quran and preserving the beauty and identity of the Arabic language.
The initiative aligns with the ministry’s efforts to strengthen connections with the Holy Quran, safeguard authentic Arab and Islamic heritage, and reinforce the cultural identity of the Arabic language through calligraphy—one of its most distinguished artistic expressions.
Adham Al-Jaafari, a member of the ministry’s Quran Printing Committee and a master calligrapher, noted that live calligraphy demonstrations are offered at visitors’ request. Quranic verses are written on-site in the Uthmani script, while the pavilion also features a specialized section dedicated to reviewing Qurans, drafting official letters, and Arabicization in accordance with the established rules of Quranic calligraphy.
Al-Jaafari added that the work extends beyond calligraphy to include explaining the stages of proofreading and verifying the Quranic text, a meticulous process carried out in cooperation with scholars from religious institutions and specialized assistants.
He emphasized that the high level of engagement demonstrates public enthusiasm for the art of writing and a renewed appreciation for Arabic calligraphy’s role in preserving and transmitting the Quran.
Hudhaifa Al-Ali of the ministry’s Quranic Calligraphers Department likewise stated that the positive reception highlights public awareness of the significance of this authentic art form and reflects a deep connection to both the Holy Quran and the Arabic language. He stressed that Arabic calligraphy is not merely a writing tool, but a comprehensive artistic discipline devoted to serving the Quranic text.
The Damascus International Book Fair opened on February 5 and will continue through February 16. Approximately 500 publishing houses and cultural institutions from 35 countries are participating, presenting their latest publications and cultural contributions.
