Cleric: Resistance Is a Divine, Rational Movement Rooted in Faith and Insight

The director of planning at the Iraqi Ulema Association says resistance is a divinely guided movement founded on faith, awareness, and strategic calculation, rejecting Western claims that portray it as emotional or irrational.

Hawzah News Agency- Addressing the international scientific conference titled “Martyr Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah: The Key to Resistance and the Genius of Leadership,” held on Wednesday at Razavi University of Islamic Sciences, Hojatoleslam Sheikh Naji Khaqani outlined the Qur’anic, religious, and rational foundations of resistance and stressed the necessity of remaining faithful to the path of the martyrs.

Speaking before an audience of intellectuals, seminary and university professors, cultural activists, and religious researchers, Sheikh Khaqani said Muslims bear a heavy responsibility toward their scholarly predecessors, spiritual leaders, and martyrs. “This responsibility is not optional,” he said. “It is a divine and religious duty that cannot be postponed or ignored.”

He emphasized that speaking the truth is itself a religious obligation, noting that resistance is neither spontaneous nor driven by emotion. “Resistance is a divine project,” he said, “shaped by the will of God and grounded in faith, insight, and precise calculation. It is both our right and our duty to speak the truth clearly and without hesitation.”

Sheikh Khaqani highlighted the deep cultural impact of resistance, saying it extends beyond politics into personal, family, and social life. “This logic shapes the upbringing of our children,” he noted. “They learn to choose their path with confidence and without fear. This reflects how resistance has evolved into a culture—one rooted in faith rather than material interests or short-term calculations.”

Describing resistance as a major test of faith and political integrity, he said it distinguishes those who adhere to the Qur’an from those who distance themselves from it. “The Holy Qur’an is our criterion,” he stressed. “It is a book that honors humanity and illuminates the path of dignity, steadfastness, and resistance.”

Criticizing Western narratives, Sheikh Khaqani said Westernized thinking has consistently sought to depict resistance as extreme or irrational. “In reality,” he said, “resistance is built on religious rationality, mercy, insight, and a realistic understanding of circumstances. The Qur’an commands steadfastness and warns against compromise with falsehood.”

He further underlined the inseparable link between faith and action, saying genuine belief must translate into courage and readiness to confront injustice. “A believer cannot remain silent in the face of oppression or distortion of the truth,” he said, pointing to the example of divine prophets, the infallible Imams (peace be upon them), and righteous leaders who openly challenged tyranny despite the cost.

Sheikh Khaqani also highlighted the role of Imam Khomeini (RA) in reviving the spirit of resistance in the contemporary era, saying he demonstrated that Islam is a religion of dignity and confrontation with injustice, not silence or compromise. “Any movement that strips Islam of this spirit has deviated from its essence,” he said, adding that true Islam is defined by faith, action, sacrifice, and perseverance under pressure, sanctions, and threats.

Stressing the importance of clarity and honesty, he said martyrs remain the ultimate criterion for recognizing the true path. “Their blood is divine proof,” he said, “revealing where truth lies.”

Referring to martyr Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah, Sheikh Khaqani described him as a clear embodiment of faith, courage, and rational leadership. He said Nasrallah’s reliance on God, strategic vision, and deep political understanding demonstrated that resistance is a synthesis of profound belief, calculated strategy, and divine insight. “His martyrdom further clarified the divine verses for the Islamic nation and exposed the true face of the enemies,” he added.

Concluding his remarks, Sheikh Khaqani stressed that pressures, threats, and psychological warfare must not lead to retreat. “The path of the martyrs is the path of Islam,” he said. “It has been paved with their blood and continues on the basis of the Qur’an, the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), and the school of Imam Khomeini (RA). The divine promise remains firm: in the end, truth will prevail.”
