What Does God Want from Our Worship?

In a moving narration reported from Prophet Moses (PBUH), the great prophet teaches a young man — through the example of a shepherd and his lost goat — that worship brings no benefit to God, but serves as a shield protecting human beings from the temptations of Satan.

Hawzah News Agency- One day, a young man came to Prophet Moses (PBUH) and asked:

“O Moses, what benefit does my worship give to God that He commands and insists on it?”

Prophet Moses (PBUH) replied:

“I remember when I was young and shepherding the flock of Prophet Shuaib. One day, a weak goat climbed a dangerous cliff. I feared it might fall and perish. With great effort I reached it, embraced it, and whispered:

‘O little goat! God knows that all this running after you and calling you back is not for the silver coin that would come to me from your sale. Moses has no need for that small price. My chasing you is because of the danger you do not see — the wolf waiting to seize you.’

Then Prophet Moses (PBUH) turned to the young man and said:

“O young man, know that God neither benefits nor is harmed by our worship. He commands us to worship Him only so that we may be protected from the snares of our spiteful enemy — the accursed Satan.”

This profound truth is reflected in the Holy Qur’an, where Allah the Exalted says:

وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ

“And whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil, and he becomes his companion.”
Surah al-Zukhruf (43:36)

Indeed, worship is not for the benefit of the Creator, but for the purification and protection of the servant. Through prayer, remembrance, and devotion, the believer builds a fortress against heedlessness and the deception of Satan — drawing nearer to divine mercy.
