Jakarta Looks to Tehran: Forum Explores Iran's Blueprint for Independence and Religious Identity

Jakarta is set to host two cultural and intellectual events on Saturday, August 22, 2026, featuring Dr. Yahya Jahangiri, Cultural Attaché of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia. The first is a forum titled "Belajar dari Iran" (Learning from Iran), which will examine Iran's experience in preserving independence, national and religious identity, and resistance against foreign pressure.

Hawzah News Agency- The scholarly session will take place in the Ciputat area of South Tangerang, coinciding with the 81st anniversary of Indonesia's independence and the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad's birth in the year 2026. Under the slogan "Merawat Api Kemerdekaan 100%" (Guarding the Flame of Independence), the event will explore how the Islamic Republic of Iran has maintained its sovereignty and cultural-religious character amid external challenges.

Dr. Yahya Jahangiri will deliver remarks alongside Indonesian academics and public intellectuals. Other speakers include Professor Khalid al-Walid, a scholar of Islamic philosophy at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta; Gus Harry Hariyanto Azzumi, a figure within the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) movement; and KH. Abdul Hakim Dubbun, a noted Indonesian Muslim thinker.

Organizers say the forum will adopt a comparative approach, discussing the experiences of Iran and Indonesia on concepts such as independence, identity, resistance, culture, and the role of religion in safeguarding national assets. The choice of the theme "Learning from Iran" reflects growing interest among Indonesian intellectual and cultural circles in Iran's model of political and cultural resilience.

The event begins at 7:00 PM at Gerak Gerik Cafe & Book Store in Ciputat, South Tangerang. It is organized by the alumni association of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at UIN Jakarta in collaboration with the Mandala Project.

Second Event: Poetry Anthology by Indonesian Women Poets Launched in Jakarta

Simultaneously, Jakarta will also host a literary event spotlighting the work of Indonesian women poets. The launch and discussion of the poetry collection "Empat Musim Mengasuh Waktu" (Four Seasons, Nurturing Time) will take place Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the HB Jassin Literary Center within the Taman Ismail Marzuki cultural complex.

Dr. Yahya Jahangiri is scheduled to attend as a special guest speaker at the event, which features a collection authored by Indonesian women poets. The program will include a public discussion and critical review of the anthology.
