Morocco to Modernize Religious Outreach and Rehabilitate Mosques

Morocco’s Minister of Religious Endowments, Ahmed Toufiq, has reiterated the government’s commitment to modernizing religious outreach and rehabilitating the country’s mosques. Currently, 1,485 mosques remain closed, necessitating an estimated two billion dirhams for their restoration.

Hawzah News Agency- During a recent parliamentary session, Minister Toufiq highlighted the ministry’s ongoing programs aimed at enhancing the religious discourse and improving the infrastructure of mosques across the nation.

The ministry has implemented various awareness programs, including a charter for scholars and community engagement strategies, to invigorate the scientific outreach of mosques through extensive preaching sessions and educational courses.

Toufiq discussed the “Communication and Outreach Strategy,” overseen by scholars, as a pivotal initiative in Morocco’s religious administration. This strategy focuses on refining practices and instilling values rooted in faith and good deeds, thereby fortifying community ties. Additionally, the minister underscored the importance of traditional Islamic education, which centers on memorizing the Quran as a prerequisite for attaining religious scholarly status, reinforcing the ministry’s collaborations with various national institutions for enhanced curriculum development and educational partnerships.

Toufiq reported that since the launch of the mosque rehabilitation program in 2010, over 2,200 mosques have been restored with investments exceeding 3.87 billion dirhams. However, with 1,485 mosques still needing attention and an annual closure rate of around 586 mosques due to safety inspections, the ministry faces a significant challenge in balancing safety and accessibility for worshippers.
