Hawzah News Agency- – In a move that has ignited debates across academic and political circles, Georgetown University has suspended Dr. Jonathan A.C. Brown from his academic responsibilities following a tweet in which he urged the Islamic Republic of Iran to conduct a symbolic missile strike on a U.S. military base in response to ongoing American support for Israeli aggression in Gaza.
Dr. Brown, who holds the Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, made the controversial remarks via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. In his post, he expressed frustration with what he called “American complicity in Israel’s war crimes” and said he hoped Iran would carry out a “non-lethal, symbolic strike to awaken the conscience of the West''.
The university responded promptly, announcing during a congressional hearing that Brown has been placed on administrative leave and removed from his position as department chair, pending a formal review of his conduct.
The tweet drew sharp criticism from Jewish and pro-Israel organizations, who called the statement “irresponsible” and “dangerously inflammatory''.
Dr. Brown’s supporters, however, argue that his remarks fall within the scope of free speech and are symbolic protests, not actual calls for violence. Several Muslim and academic voices have come to his defense, emphasizing the need to be allowed to criticize U.S. foreign policy without fear of institutional retribution.
So far, Dr. Brown has not issued a formal apology.
