A Weak and Cowardly Muslim Has No Place in the Logic of the Qur’an

In every age, the front of disbelief exists in opposition to the front of faith. The disbelievers and enemies of God have never had the patience or capacity to endure the realization of true and authentic Islam, and they constantly strive to extinguish the light of God and His religion. Therefore, a true Muslim never tolerates silence in the face of disbelievers and oppressors, nor does he confront the enemy from a position of weakness and fear. And it is precisely this that provokes the anger of the disbelievers and the enemies of God.

Hawzah News Agency – The Holy Qur’an points to one of the most important instances of “righteous deeds” and says:

«لَا یُصِیبُهُمْ ظَمَأٌ وَلَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا مَخْمَصَةٌ فِی سَبِیلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا یَطَئُونَ مَوْطِئًا یَغِیظُ الْکُفَّارَ وَلَا یَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَیْلًا إِلَّا کُتِبَ لَهُمْ بِهِ عَمَلٌ صَالِحٌ.»

they neither experience any thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger, in the way of Allah, nor do they tread any ground enraging the faithless, nor do they gain any ground against an enemy but a righteous deed is written for them on its account. (Tawbah; 9:120)

Explanation:

If, in today’s Muslim society, people are asked what “righteous deeds” mean in their view, they may refer to prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, charity, almsgiving, being good to one’s neighbors, and the like. Yet it is rare to find a Muslim who would mention enraging the enemies of God as a righteous deed. This is precisely the important point whose failure to be understood has, throughout history, caused the Muslim community to face many difficulties.

For a deeper understanding of the righteous deed referred to in the verse, let us turn to Surah al-‘Asr.

«وَالْعَصْرِ. إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِی خُسْرٍ. إِلَّا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ.»

By Time! Man is indeed in loss, except those who have faith and do righteous deeds, and enjoin one another to [follow] the truth, and enjoin one another to patience.

In this blessed surah, God says that “all human beings are in loss” except those who perform righteous deeds, who are exempted from this group of the losers.

What is a righteous deed?

In the verse under discussion, in the view of the Almighty God, any step that causes the enemy to become angered is considered a righteous deed.

It may even be said that, among all deeds, this righteous deed is of especially great importance; for in every age, the front of disbelief exists opposite the front of faith.

The disbelievers and enemies who have never been able to endure the establishment of true and authentic Islam, and who constantly seek to extinguish this divine light and religion, are precisely why a true Muslim never accepts silence in the face of disbelievers and oppressors, and never confronts the enemy from a position of weakness and fear. This, in turn, leads to the displeasure and anger of the disbelievers and the enemies of God.

The verse in question expresses a reality that the Muslim world as a whole, especially in our present age, has still not fully grasped.

Neglecting this righteous deed, as also indicated in Surah al-‘Asr, will place a person among the losers and subject him to material and spiritual ruin.

In short, in the logic of the Qur’an, there is no place for a weak and cowardly Muslim; and many other verses also point to this very truth.
