Muharram Observed with Revolutionary Spirit Across Georgia

Shiite community holds widespread and vibrant mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussein (AS)

Tbilisi, Georgia — With the arrival of Muharram 1447, Georgia’s Shiite community commemorated the martyrdom of Imam Aba Abdullah al-Hussein (AS) through widespread and powerful mourning ceremonies marked by both spiritual depth and revolutionary fervor.

Held across various regions of the country, these religious and social gatherings stood out for their organization, passionate participation, and strong emphasis on the values of resistance, sacrifice, and Islamic unity.

The ceremonies drew large numbers of mourners, including youth and families, who gathered in mosques, religious centers, and public spaces. The rituals included traditional lamentation, recitations of elegies, processions, and speeches reflecting on the timeless message of Karbala — resistance against oppression and defense of truth.

This year’s events were notable for their revolutionary tone, as participants not only mourned but also reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of Imam Hussein (AS), aligning the spirit of Ashura with contemporary struggles for justice and dignity.

Religious leaders, scholars, and organizers emphasized that the widespread and energetic commemoration demonstrated the growing vitality of Islamic values in Georgia’s diverse society.
