The final procession in Mashhad saw vast crowds fill the city’s streets as mourners accompanied the funeral vehicle. Prayers were also held along nearby roads due to the unprecedented turnout.
According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, the ceremonies—held across Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala and Mashhad—attracted between 41 and 43 million participants, based on transport records, mobile phone data, crowd-density analysis and official field estimates. Iraqi authorities separately confirmed that around 10 million people attended ceremonies in Najaf and Karbala.
The funeral rites began last Friday with tributes from officials representing more than 45 countries and scholars from over 90 nations, followed by mass gatherings in Tehran, Qom and Iraq before concluding in Mashhad.
Mourners from several countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Turkey and Nigeria, joined the ceremonies, with prominent religious figures also attending.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei was assassinated on February 28, along with several members of his family, in what Iran described as a terrorist attack carried out by the United States and Israel during the opening day of the 40-day war against the Islamic Republic. Among those martyred were the wife of the new Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son-in-law, a daughter, and his 14-month-old granddaughter.
