Ashura: A Prescription for Unity and Justice, Says Bangladeshi Cleric

A senior Bangladeshi cleric has called on the Muslim Ummah to implement the message of Ashura in their lives, asserting that the Karbala uprising offers a timeless formula for unity, justice, and the eradication of oppression.

Hawzah News Agency- Hojatoleslam Amjad Hossein, Public Relations and Communications Secretary of the Bangladesh Imamia Ulama Council, made the remarks at a mourning ceremony in Chittagong, where he emphasized that if the message of Ashura is put into practice, many of the divisions and injustices plaguing Muslim societies will disappear.

Love of the Ahl al-Bayt: A Divine Obligation

Hossein opened his address by stating that love and affection for the Ahl al-Bayt of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is a matter of faith and a binding religious and moral duty upon every Muslim. "This is not optional," he declared. "The entire Ummah bears this responsibility."

He rejected the notion of Ashura as a mere tragic historical episode, instead describing it as an eternal wellspring for the struggle against tyranny, oppression, despotism, and hegemonic domination.

Citing verse 23 of Surah Ash-Shura, Hossein recited: "Say: I ask no reward from you for this except affection for my relatives." He explained: "Love for the Prophet's household is not a mere sentimental attachment; it is a divine, religious, and ethical obligation upon the Islamic Ummah. Without holding fast to the path and Sirah of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT), the true reality of Islam cannot be realized in society."

'I Rose Only to Reform': The Mission of Imam Hussein

The Bangladeshi scholar then turned to the core philosophy of Imam Hussein's (PBUH) uprising, quoting the Imam's own words: "I did not rise out of arrogance, pride, corruption, or injustice. I rose solely to seek reform in the Ummah of my grandfather. I intend to enjoin good and forbid evil."

He stressed that through his stand at Karbala against oppression, Imam Hussein (PBUH) imparted to humanity the greatest lesson in freedom, dignity, and the pursuit of truth. The sacrifice and martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his faithful companions, he said, will remain an inspiration to all free people and justice-seekers until the Day of Judgment.

The Yazidi Current: A Transhistorical Enemy

Hossein was emphatic that Yazid is not merely a historical figure, but the enduring symbol of oppression, despotism, criminality, and injustice. Throughout history, he warned, the Yazidi current has reemerged in various faces and forms. "Today," he stated, "the hegemonic and colonialist powers are the continuation of that very same path of oppression."

He linked the struggle to the present day, asserting that the fight against global arrogance and domination continues, and that free nations, inspired by the culture of Ashura, are standing firm against injustice. He called on Muslims to draw inspiration from Karbala, to stand with the oppressed, and to refuse silence in the face of tyrants.

Karbala's Timeless Message

"Imam Hussein (PBUH) taught us that in defending truth and righteousness, one must stand firm—and if necessary, sacrifice one's very life," Hossein concluded. "The message of Karbala does not belong to the past alone; it is the guide for the individual, social, and political life of Muslims in every era."

He closed by urging the Islamic Ummah toward unity, the spread of justice, the confrontation of oppression, and the revival of Islamic values, affirming: "If the Muslim community grasps the truth of Ashura's message and implements it in daily life, most of our problems, divisions, and injustices will be resolved."
