"No to Sectarian Strife": Kashmir's Top Shiite and Sunni Clerics Seal Pact of Unity and Resistance

As the holy month of Muharram approaches, the Shiite-Sunni Coordination Committee of the United Ulama Council of Kashmir convened in Srinagar, bringing together a gathering of scholars, thinkers, and religious and social figures.

Hawzah News Agency- on the eve of the sacred month of Muharram, the Shiite-Sunni Coordination Committee of the "United Ulama Council of Kashmir" held a significant meeting at the central office of the Auqaf Association of Srinagar's Grand Mosque. The session was attended by a host of scholars, religious leaders, thinkers, and social figures from across the religious spectrum.

Emphasis on Islamic Ummah Unity and Inter-Sectarian Convergence

Examining the challenges facing the Islamic Ummah at local, national, and international levels, participants stressed the necessity of strengthening Islamic unity, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and sustained dialogue among Islamic schools of thought. Speakers noted that under the current circumstances, cooperation and interaction among followers of different Islamic denominations are more essential than ever to safeguard security, stability, and social cohesion.

Safeguarding the Sanctity of Muharram and Confronting Divisive Schemes

Pointing to the elevated status of the month of Muharram, attendees emphasized preserving an atmosphere of brotherhood and empathy within society. They declared that no attempts to incite sectarian tensions or undermine social unity would be allowed to succeed.

Warning Against Misuse of Cyberspace

Participants also expressed concern over certain misunderstandings and tensions that arose in the past year due to content circulated on social media platforms. They called on religious organizations, orators, speakers, and the general public to exercise responsibility, precision, and moderation in their use of cyberspace and in expressing public views.

Reverence for the Ahl al-Bayt, the Axis of Islamic Unity

The meeting stressed the necessity of upholding the dignity and lofty status of the revered companions of the Holy Prophet and the purified Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT). Attendees affirmed that any speech or action deemed provocative and divisive stands in contradiction to Islamic teachings, the unity of the Ummah, and the long-standing tradition of coexistence and tolerance in Kashmir.

Members present at the session once again underscored the importance of dialogue, engagement, and building mutual trust among followers of the Shiite and Sunni denominations. They called for the continuation of consultative meetings and joint programs aimed at strengthening relations and broadening social solidarity. They further emphasized continued joint efforts to resolve public issues and advance the welfare and development of the community.

Proposal to Form a Special Muharram Committee

During the session, a proposal was put forward to establish a special committee under the supervision of the United Ulama Council of Kashmir. The proposed body would continuously monitor developments and social conditions during Muharram and adopt necessary measures in a timely manner should any tension-provoking actions or threats to religious unity arise.

Appreciation for the Efforts of the United Ulama Council

At the conclusion of the meeting, Hojatoleslam Sayyed Mujtaba Abbas Mousavi, a Kashmiri religious figure, lauded the role and services of the United Ulama Council of Kashmir and its leadership, particularly Dr. Maulvi Mohammad Omar Farooq, in strengthening Islamic unity, guiding the community, and expanding convergence among the Islamic schools of thought. He emphasized the necessity of preserving Kashmir's valuable traditions of tolerance, dialogue, and mutual respect, and called for the continuation of this approach within society.
