Turban-Donning Ceremony for Seminary Students to Be Held at Qom’s Grand Mosque

A traditional turban-donning ceremony for students of the Jahangir Khan Seminary will be held at Qom’s Grand Mosque, coinciding with celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him.

Hawzah News Agency- the turban-donning ceremony is one of the most symbolic and identity-defining rites in the tradition of Shia seminaries. It is typically conducted after students have completed a stage of their preliminary studies and demonstrated a basic level of scholarly competence and ethical suitability.

The ceremony goes beyond the mere adoption of clerical attire. It represents the formal entry of a seminary student into the social and spiritual life of the clergy, as well as the acceptance of religious and societal responsibilities. In this context, the turban symbolizes continuity with the centuries-old juristic and intellectual tradition of Shia Islam and reflects the individual’s connection to a long history of religious education, preaching, and spiritual leadership.

For this reason, the event is usually accompanied by the recitation of Qur’anic verses, narrations from the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), and moral and spiritual advice, underscoring the weight of commitment and accountability associated with wearing the clerical turban.

This year’s ceremony will be held on the birth anniversary of Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, alongside a celebratory gathering organized at the Grand Mosque of Qom for the occasion. The event is expected to draw clerics, seminary teachers, students, and members of the public, highlighting the enduring role of the seminary in nurturing religious scholarship and guiding society.
