Hawzah News Agency- In a Christmas address delivered on Thursday, the Pope deplored the suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States, asked, “How can we not think of the tents in Gaza, which for weeks have remained exposed to rain, wind, and cold?” a reference to the worsening humanitarian crisis and the continued suffering of the population.
The Pope’s remarks come as a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Hamas Movement entered into force last October, following two years of intense bombardment and military operations. However, humanitarian organizations say that aid reaching Gaza remains extremely limited, amid the near-total displacement of the territory’s population.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel, backed by the United States and Europe, have carried out what is described as genocide in the Gaza Strip, involving killing, starvation, destruction, displacement, and arrests, while disregarding international appeals and orders by the International Court of Justice to halt the actions.
The genocide has left more than 242,000 Palestinians killed or injured, most of them children and women, with over 11,000 remain missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands displaced and a famine that has claimed many lives, mostly children, alongside widespread destruction and the erasure of most of Gaza’s cities and areas from the map.
