Finnish students call on universities to cut Israel ties

A coordinated campaign of walkouts and demonstrations by students began at university campuses across Finland on the afternoon of 3 December. The protests were organised by the Students for Palestine movement, demanding that Finnish universities commit to an academic boycott of Israel and cut off finances to Israeli universities, reports Yle News.

Hawzah News Agency- Demonstrations have taken place in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Kuopio, with smaller events organised at the University of Lapland and the University of Oulu. While an estimated 200 students participated in the protest in Tampere, Jarmo Takala, vice-rector of the University of Tampere, told Yle that the university currently has no links to any Israeli universities. Tapio Määttä, rector of the University of Eastern Finland, meanwhile noted that the university has some older cooperation agreements with Israeli universities, but no active collaboration that could be cut off.

A petition, published by the movement, called on the University of Helsinki to sever all ties with Israeli institutions, in particular all 15 EU-funded Horizon Europe research projects.
