Quran and Hadith University President Outlines Role of Artificial Intelligence in Hadith Research

Hojatoleslam Abdulhadi Masoudi, President of the University of the Quran and Hadith, has highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence in Hadith-related research and technical processes, stressing that AI must first be understood as a discipline before it can be effectively applied.

Speaking to Hawzah News Agency, Hojatoleslam Masoudi said the Dar al-Hadith University has adopted a structured approach toward AI, beginning with specialized training workshops and sustained engagement with technical experts. He noted that the center has held multiple sessions with scholars and AI specialists to familiarize professors, students, and researchers with the capabilities and limitations of the technology.

Masoudi pointed to tangible advancements within the institution, explaining that AI now performs a significant share of the translation and Arabization work for the Encyclopedia of the Quran and Hadith. About three-quarters of these processes, he said, are currently carried out automatically by AI systems, though human supervision remains essential due to occasional errors. He described artificial intelligence not as a substitute for human expertise, but as a “powerful assistant” capable of markedly improving efficiency.

On the role of AI in religious outreach, the university president said the technology can help identify recurring questions, doubts, and social needs by analyzing patterns across digital platforms. While AI can assist preachers and researchers in recognizing community concerns, Hojatoleslam Masoudi stressed that its assessments must always be subjected to human scrutiny.

He added that artificial intelligence can also enhance message delivery by adapting religious content to various audiences — including youth, children, students, women, and general viewers — through literary, artistic, and media-based adjustments. However, he warned against uncritical reliance on AI-generated material, emphasizing the need for careful review and refinement before publication.

Discussing international outreach, Hojatoleslam Masoudi said AI-based translation tools can help produce large amounts of content in Arabic, English, and other languages, provided that skilled human translators finalize and edit the texts for accuracy and cultural nuance.

The cleric concluded that the integration of artificial intelligence into Hadith scholarship and religious communication represents a significant technological step, but one that must remain firmly anchored in expert oversight and scholarly precision.
