Seven Years On: Remembering the Arbaeen Massacre in Nigeria

On October 29, 2018, Nigerian security forces under the orders of then-President Muhammadu Buhari opened fire on peaceful mourners marking Arba’een in Abuja, killing more than 50 people and injuring dozens. marks the seventh anniversary of that tragic event, which remains a dark stain on Nigeria’s human rights record.

Hawzah News Agency- Seven years have passed since the horrific Arba’een Massacre in Abuja, where Nigerian soldiers brutally attacked unarmed mourners participating in the annual Arba’een Symbolic Trek — a peaceful religious procession held to honor the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.), the eternal symbol of justice and resistance against oppression.

On that black Monday of 29th October 2018, the HQ Nigerian Army’s Guard Brigade mercilessly slaughtered over 50 innocent Arba’een mourners, injuring dozens more with live bullets and leaving countless families in tears. Their only “crime” was participating in the Arba’een Symbolic Trek, a peaceful religious procession held annually in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the eternal symbol of justice and resistance against tyranny.
