Hawzah News Agency- In conversations with scholars from religious and academic institutions, the Arbaeen Walk was described not only as a spiritual journey but as a global platform for voicing truth, defending the oppressed, and promoting unity in the Islamic world.
Arbaeen: More Than a Ritual
Hojjat al-Islam Mohammad Malekzadeh, a member of the academic board at the Research Institute of Islamic Culture and Thought, emphasized that the Arbaeen pilgrimage is not merely an external ritual but a living manifestation of the bond between Imam Hussain’s (AS) lovers and the timeless truth of Ashura.
“The tradition of Arbaeen began with the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), when they returned from captivity in Syria and visited the graves of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in Karbala,” Malekzadeh noted. “Historically, figures such as Jabir ibn Abdullah were among the first pilgrims.”
He added that Arbaeen must be viewed from multiple dimensions — spiritual, social, and political — noting that the walk reflects Shia unity and strength and sparks global interest in the message and life of Imam Hussain (AS).
“Our rituals, including Arbaeen, should align with the broader goal of fostering Islamic unity,” he stated. “The infallible imams (AS) always prioritized cohesion within the Muslim Ummah.”
The Mission of Clergy and the Media in Arbaeen
Malekzadeh stressed that Arbaeen is an ideal opportunity for clerics, seminarians, and the broader community to fulfill their responsibility of explaining the values of Ashura in the context of today’s world.
“In line with the Supreme Leader’s emphasis on the Jihad of Explanation, clerics must use their presence among the people to address contemporary issues and raise awareness,” he said.
He also called for enhanced media strategy and communication efforts, highlighting the post-2003 growth of the Arbaeen procession following the fall of the Saddam regime.
“This spiritual movement has transcended cultural boundaries and become a symbol of freedom and dignity. It is our duty to strengthen its media presence,” Malekzadeh said.
Arbaeen as a Platform for Global Resistance
Dr. Sayyidah Fatima Mudalalkar, a seminary and university lecturer, praised the hospitality and devotion of the Iraqi people during Arbaeen, describing it as a peak manifestation of Islamic ethics.
“The sincere service of the Iraqi nation to all pilgrims, especially Iranians, deserves deep appreciation,” she said.
Mudalalkar also pointed to the growing participation of youth from various countries, many of whom are disillusioned with their governments’ stance on Israel but inspired by the message of resistance.
“This is a rare chance to introduce religious concepts and the discourse of the Islamic Revolution to these young people. Many see the resistance movement as the only effective force against oppression,” she explained.
She emphasized that Arbaeen must serve as a platform to support the oppressed of the world, particularly the people of Gaza, by highlighting the universal message of Ashura.
“Imam Hussain’s followers are always on the frontlines of defending truth and confronting tyranny,” she added, quoting martyr Motahari’s view that one must understand the circumstances of their time to avoid missteps in the fight for justice.
Becoming Messengers of Hussain’s Movement
Concluding her remarks, Dr. Mudalalkar stressed that every step taken during the Arbaeen walk is a step toward spiritual growth and enlightenment.
“This journey, carried out in the name of Hazrat Abu Abdullah al-Hussain (AS), is a powerful opportunity to enhance insight in today’s world. That is why strong media coverage is essential to convey its profound message globally,” she concluded.
