Hawzah News Agency- In a press statement issued following a symbolic protest in Islamabad, Hujjat al-Islam Shobeir Hassan Maysami described the move as “irresponsible,” warning that it has caused widespread confusion, emotional distress, and spiritual pressure on thousands of pilgrims preparing to visit the holy shrines of Imam Hussain (AS) in Iraq.
“The decision to block land routes for Arbaeen pilgrims is not only unfair and illogical but also deeply insensitive to the religious devotion of countless citizens,” Maysami said. “This act demonstrates a serious lack of commitment by officials toward the religious rights and needs of the people.”
In response to the ban, the Pakistan Shia Ulema Council announced the launch of a nationwide protest movement. Members of the Central Executive Board formally declared the beginning of this movement during a press conference held in front of the National Press Club in Islamabad, vowing to continue public demonstrations until the government reverses its decision.
The Council expressed deep dissatisfaction with what it termed the government's “opaque and indifferent approach” to the religious concerns of the Shia community. It called for the immediate withdrawal of the ban and warned of growing public unrest should authorities continue to ignore the legitimate religious demands of the people.
“The restriction not only wastes the time and resources of the pilgrims but also creates unnecessary psychological and logistical hardships. Religious freedom and the right to perform sacred rituals must be respected and facilitated, not obstructed,” Maysami added.
At the conclusion of the gathering, the Shia Ulema Council reiterated its commitment to continuing the protest movement until the government revokes the land travel ban and ensures pilgrims can perform their religious duties without interference or restriction.
