In an interview with Hawzah News Agency on the anniversary of her martyrdom, Hujjat al-Islam Dargahi emphasized that despite her tender age, Hazrat Ruqayyah (PBUH) played a crucial role in conveying the tragedy of Karbala to the wider world through her suffering and innocence.
“Her name, Ruqayyah, derived from the word ruqi, means elevation and progress,” he noted, adding that some historical sources suggest her given name was Fatima, with Ruqayyah used as an affectionate title.
Dargahi explained that while historical records may vary, what remains undeniable is her profound impact on the legacy of Ashura. “By stirring hearts and awakening the conscience of society, Hazrat Ruqayyah (PBUH) achieved a lasting emotional victory that still touches hearts centuries later.”
He went on to underline the role of emotional connection in the movement of Imam Hussein (PBUH), stating, “Affectivity is one of the most powerful tools in awakening a dormant society. Imam Hussein (PBUH) skillfully utilized this in his uprising, and each member of the caravan of captives helped preserve his message through speeches, elegies, and their patient endurance.”
Despite being only three years old, Hazrat Ruqayyah (PBUH) endured the severe hardships of thirst, hunger, and captivity with astonishing resilience. “She did not let the truth of Ashura be silenced,” Dargahi affirmed. “Through her tears, trials, and pure spirit, she became a messenger of Karbala.”
Reflecting on her legacy, Dargahi concluded: “The movement of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and the courage of Hazrat Ruqayyah (PBUH) teach us a lasting lesson—we must strive to enlighten society with truth and awareness. And when we stand alongside the oppressed, we must be prepared to embrace every hardship on the path of justice and dignity.”
