L.A. chapter of Council on American-Islamic Relations suing OCSD for forcibly removing protesters hijabs

Suing Orange County, the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Don Barnes and individual OCSD deputies for forcibly removing the hijabs of two women while detaining them at a protest at UC Irvine last year.

Hawzah News Agency- According to the complaint, the two young women were participating in a student protest on campus in May 2024 when they were arrested. The deputies arresting them allegedly forced them to take off their hijabs, which are head coverings worn by Muslim women.

Both plaintiffs spoke at the press conference Tuesday and offered their sides of the story.

“When I was asked to remove my hijab, I was shocked'', said one of them, Salma Nasoordeen. “I’ve never in my life been asked to remove my hijab for any government identification photos…my ID, my passport, none of that''.

The second plaintiff, Shenai Aini, said she went through a similar harrowing experience.

“Due to the actions of the OCSD deputy, my exposed hair was broadcasted for the world to see'', Aini said. “In the process of being booked, I was forced to be exposed in the view of males and have my photo taken without my hijab against my will''.

“I want to make it clear that my hijab is the ultimate sign of my faith'', she added. “It serves as my identity, my protection and my faith''.

According to Queen Mary University of London, Muslim women wear hijabs because it is specifically mentioned in the Qur’an, the most important religious text in Islam, that women who wear the head cover will be closer to God.
