Hawzah News Agency - The holy Quran says:
«وَلَا تَسْتَوِي الْحَسَنَةُ وَلَا السَّيِّئَةُ ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا الَّذِي بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ عَدَاوَةٌ كَأَنَّهُ وَلِيٌّ حَمِيمٌ.»
"Good and evil [conduct] are not equal. Repel [evil] with what is best. [If you do so,] he between whom and you was enmity, will then be as though he were a sympathetic friend." 1
Explanation:
All our actions should be imbued with the color of divine guidance. We must both seek guidance for ourselves and guide others toward God and this cannot be achieved except through friendship and love.
Sometimes, we face unpleasant behavior from others. In such situations, there are two possible reactions:
- Respond to their bad behavior with bad behavior, i.e., retaliate in kind.
- Be patient in the face of their wrongdoing and direct our love and kindness toward them.
As Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said, "Reconnect with those who have distanced themselves from you. Forgive those who have wronged you. Give to those who have deprived you. And do good to those who have treated you badly." 2
The result of such behavior, according to God’s words in the mentioned verse, is the creation of friendship and love. Someone who, moments ago, expressed his enmity, can—under the influence of our reaction—transform into a friend whose attention and love are now directed toward us. This is how a person who has adorned himself with guidance can also facilitate the guidance of others.
Final Point:
In moments of anger and rage, when our entire being is filled with hatred and hostility, and when our rebellious Nafs urges us to retaliate in kind against the bad actions of others, let us turn our attention to the Beloved (GOD). The Beloved, who between good and evil, prefers goodness.
Truly, which lover would not make the desire of his beloved his own desire? If he prefers any desire other than that of his beloved, he is not a true lover.
