Hawzah News Agency –Two weeks ago, French parliamentarians marginally approved an amendment prohibiting “the conspicuous wearing of religious signs” while participating in sports. This amendment was proposed by Les Republicains, a right-wing organization, which particularly referenced the hijab.
The French Football Federation and the majority of national sports federations in France prohibit the wearing of hijab, citing neutrality in sport or hygiene and safety concerns. However, activists refute those accusations, pointing out that football’s governing body, Fifa, has approved the use of headwear.
Opposing this ban, Les Hijabeuses, a group of teenage hijab-wearing female footballers, launched a campaign to put pressure on the government to rescind the new legislation. This petition, which was just launched over the weekend, has already gotten over 55,000 signatures and extensive support on social media.
The group also posted a video of French female athletes and campaigners raising awareness of the issue with the hashtag “#LaissezNousJouer” (#LetUsPlay).
