Lebanon Muslim Scholars: 'Capitulation Accord with Israel' Warrants Government's Overthrow

The Muslim Scholars Assembly in Lebanon has issued a scathing condemnation of the so-called "Washington Agreement," describing it as a document of capitulation that constitutes a flagrant violation of the Lebanese constitution and provides a legal cover for the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory.

Hawzah News Agency- In a strongly-worded statement released on Wednesday, the assembly declared that the agreement signed between the Lebanese government and the Israeli occupiers represents an explicit breach of the country's constitution, stressing that the accord effectively grants the occupation forces the right to remain on Lebanese soil and perpetuate their illegal occupation.

The assembly went on to characterize the agreement as "a document of surrender," warning that the government's entry into a pact with the enemy, with the stated aim of dismantling the resistance, amounts to an act of treason that necessitates the removal of the ruling authority through constitutional mechanisms.

"The government's engagement in an agreement with the enemy, designed to eliminate the resistance, constitutes a betrayal that warrants the toppling of this authority within constitutional frameworks," the statement read.

The Muslim Scholars Assembly further reaffirmed its full commitment to the Islamabad negotiation process, calling upon the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran to continue insisting on adherence to the first clause of the understanding in order to safeguard shared principles and protect the foundations of mutual cooperation.

The statement comes amid mounting criticism of the Lebanese government's diplomatic engagements, with various political and religious factions expressing concern over what they view as concessions that undermine national sovereignty and the legacy of the resistance against Israeli occupation.

The assembly reiterated its unwavering stance in support of the resistance as a legitimate right enshrined in international law and the Lebanese constitution, emphasizing that any attempt to disarm or dismantle it through political agreements with the Zionist entity would be met with steadfast opposition from the nation's scholars and people alike.

The Muslim Scholars Assembly has long been a vocal advocate for Lebanese sovereignty and the Palestinian cause, consistently opposing normalization with the Israeli regime and backing the resistance movements across the region.
