Hawzah News Agency- This championship victory came after a highly turbulent period for the Iranian team. Following the conclusion of the tournament, Hassan Rangraz, the national team’s head coach, reflected on the challenging preparation phase, stating: "We proved that it is possible to achieve glory even under 'wartime' conditions and amidst existing limitations."
This championship cannot be reduced merely to a team victory. Three analytical layers can be identified in this success:
First, unprecedented technical depth. Winning medals in 9 out of 10 weight classes demonstrates that Iran’s success was not dependent on just one or two star athletes. Rangraz himself noted that the "logistical support from the Federation" and the "developmental coaches across Iran" contributed to this outcome. This distribution of medals throughout the entire squad points to an efficient talent-development system, rather than just an exceptional generation of athletes.
Second, crisis management off the mat. Alireza Dabir, president of the Iranian Wrestling Federation, revealed after the championship victory that he had effectively engaged in a behind-the-scenes battle with United World Wrestling (UWW) by lodging a contentious protest against the officiating during the tournament. He stated that a UWW official had told him, "We need to distribute the medals among different countries." Dabir claimed that his forceful protest led to a reduction in "officiating errors," noting that "one person had to be sacrificed" to safeguard the team's rights.
Third, there is a context of a string of successes. This championship follows the recent triumphs of the Iranian youth team in the United States, where they secured world titles in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling in the U-23 category. Rangraz explicitly highlighted this connection, remarking, "Our young athletes possess the ability to overcome difficult circumstances." Now, the pressure and expectations have shifted to the Iranian senior freestyle wrestling team whose competition begins this Thursday with Rangraz himself expressing hope that "the freestyle team will also successfully defend its championship title."
