Yemen Scholars Association rejects Al-Azhar statement as 'grave accusation, outright fabrication' against Yemeni nation

SANAA – The Yemen Scholars Association has condemned a statement by the Sheikh of Al-Azhar concerning alleged targeting of Islamic holy sites, describing it as containing a "grave accusation, an outright fabrication and false testimony" against the Yemeni nation, and demanding that the statement be withdrawn.

Hawzah News Agency- The association expressed surprise that the statement accepted claims that Yemen had targeted Islamic holy sites.

In a statement, the association said it would have been more fitting for the Sheikh of Al-Azhar to advise the Saudi regime and call on it to halt its aggression and siege of Yemen, rather than endorsing its fabrications.

The Yemen Scholars Association called on Al-Azhar to retract the statement so that its responsibility before God may be absolved, noting that no investigation had been conducted before the statement was issued and that Sanaa had not been contacted to hear the Yemeni side's view.

The association also questioned the stance on the massacres committed by the Saudi regime and its targeting of civilian facilities in Yemen, adding that these events should be condemned and accounted for, rather than having the Yemeni nation made the target of accusations.

The statement further said the Saudi regime is seeking to draw Islamic countries and their scholars into the conflict and to exploit Islamic holy sites to give a religious and seditious color to its aggression and siege of Yemen.

Noting that the aggression against Yemen was announced from Washington, the association stressed that the attack falls within an American-Zionist plan aimed at wearing down the strength of the Islamic ummah and preparing the region for what is called the "Greater Israel project."

The Yemen Scholars Association concluded by affirming that the Yemeni people and leadership welcome any Islamic initiative to resolve disputes and reconcile the parties, provided that such an initiative serves the pleasure of God and the realization of justice, and not the interests of America and the Zionist regime.
