Martyr Imam Khamenei's selected statements on art and poetry

The issue of art is a very important issue. Art is part of human life. Art in itself is one of the requirements for the existence of humans, just like many other things. All the branches of art are like this. The people working on them are different, but all branches of art have a common point: they originate from talent and imagination. It is strong imagination and great talent that produces art. Of course, skill, experience and expert opinion exist alongside them, but the main thing is talent … art is a human phenomenon.

Hawzah News Agency- This is much more important than the creation of the sun, the moon, stars and many other things on which Allah the Exalted swears. ]Allah Most Gracious! It is He Who has taught the Quran. He has created man. He has taught him speech[ [The Holy Quran, 55: 1-4]. The first thing that Allah the Exalted mentions after creation – the creation of man – is teaching speech. “Speech” is the miracle of the creation. Among the different forms of speech, poetry has the characteristic of enjoying beauty.

Not every speech is beautiful. Every form of speech is a miracle and it is important, but beauty exists in poetry. That you are able to convey a prominent concept to the audience in the form of the words that you put together is beautiful. It has beauty. The reason why it is categorized as art is that it has an aesthetic aspect. Now that it is like this and that it has the privilege of beauty, it has turned into an efficient medium.

Poetry is a medium, one that is very efficient. It is more efficient than other non-poetic means for conveying the concept. Most forms of art are like this. Of course, they are different from one another. Poetry for instance, has special characteristics and advantages - as is the case with other forms of art - which make it unique. (May 20, 2019) The phenomenon of poetry is one of the miracles of creation. One of the miracles of the universe is the phenomenon of poetry … That you are able to convey your thoughts and your mental images to others in the form of words is a very important incident. It is a very great phenomenon. Because we have gotten used to it, we do not pay attention to its greatness. This is much more important than the creation of the sun, the moon, stars and many other things on which Allah the Exalted swears.

Of course, they are different from one another. Poetry for instance, has special characteristics and advantages - as is the case with other forms of art - which make it unique. As for art, no matter how much I speak about art, it is not enough.

I have said many times that great significance should be attached to art and that it should be developed on a daily basis. Of course, we should choose glorious and honorable forms of art. Without art, ordinary ideas do not find their way into our minds, let alone become attractive and stay there forever. Art is the most important means of developing a thought, whether it is correct or not. Art is a means, tool and medium - a very important one. We should not show negligence about art and its improvement. We should not consider it as equal to committing sins and wrongdoings. Art is one of the most outstanding works of God. It is one of the most valuable products that God has manufactured. Therefore, we should place a high value on it. (May 17, 2004) Art is an immensely precious jewel. Its value and preciousness do not lie merely in its ability to captivate hearts and eyes—after all, many things that are not artistic can also attract people's hearts and eyes. No, art is a divine gift, a blessing bestowed by God. The true essence of art—of every form of art—is precisely that.

I have said many times that great significance should be attached to art and that it should be developed on a daily basis. Of course, we should choose glorious and honorable forms of art. Without art, ordinary ideas do not find their way into our Although art manifests itself through the way it is expressed and communicated, that alone does not define its true nature. Before expression comes an artistic perception and an artistic sensibility, and that is where the essence of art resides.

Once a beauty, a subtlety, or a truth has been perceived, the artist—with that artistic spirit and the inner light of art kindled within—can give voice to countless delicate nuances and profound truths, many of which those without artistic insight may not perceive at all. That is genuine art that is born of perception, reflection, and expression. (July 23, 2001) Art is like this ... If It is worked on inside the country, it will grow gradually, like a tree which grows on a daily basis if they nurse it. If it is kept in the right place and if it is nursed, watered and pruned, the tree will grow on a daily basis and its yields and fruits will increase with the passage of time.

(June 10, 2017) Today too, human societies are interconnected with art. Art exists in the root of human life. It is not the case that art is a dispensable thing or a formality. Take the case of architecture. Architecture is an art. Well, architecture is interconnected with human life. When you live in a building, the architectural style of that building affects your soul, your thoughts, your disposition and your lifestyle. All of these are clear and obvious facts. (January 11, 2016) Some people assume that art is the same as immorality, debauchery, and secularism. This is a misconception. Art is one of the beautiful manifestations of creation that has been placed within man. The faults that some insightful people have constantly pointed out as criticisms against art are related to the wrong direction that art can take: using art in order to lead people astray and make them immoral. Otherwise, if art is accompanied by the spirit of religion and is in line with religion it can be one of the most prominent faculties that man enjoys, and, thankfully, this is the prevalent mood today. If you take a look at our poets, painters, and various artistic fields, you can often see that their work is accompanied by the spirit of religiousness and piety.

This is by no means a drawback. It would be excellent if we could have a center for training artistic skills and strengthening the position of art here, which has the right orientation. It would be really good if this great faculty could be channeled in this way. (May 7, 2008) Poetry should be in the service of noble values.

I do not deny the fact that poetry is a reflection of the poet's emotions, and that a poet has every right to express his feelings, his artistic sensibility, and his poetic perception through the verses that God has gifted him with the talent to compose. But poetry, as a sublime and distinguished art—as one of God's great blessings—also carries a responsibility. It has a duty that goes beyond the expression of feelings. In my view, that responsibility is to serve religion, the Revolution, morality, and deep knowledge. If poetry fulfills this responsibility, justice is done; a righteous deed has been performed and a just act has been accomplished. The responsibility of poetry as an art, and the responsibility of the poet as an artist must be clearly defined with respect to creation, Almighty God, and Islamic and revolutionary commitments, and these duties must be faithfully carried out. This duty entails guiding God's servants toward Him, and elevating and uplifting the ethics and insight of society. Poetry should serve people's understanding, their faith, morality, and our nation’s revolutionary movement—a movement that is profoundly valuable, precious, and rare. All of these factors must be carefully taken into account in poetry. (Aug 4, 2012) With the tool of poetry, you can guide your audience towards both the straight path and the deviant path - one that ruins your audience. Poetry can lead us into an abyss. We have such kinds of poems particularly in the present time when the culture of decadence and immorality is unfortunately being promoted in a serious way by the modern means of mass communication - the new media means. Sometimes, poetry becomes a tool for committing sins and taking a deviant path. This is the other side of the matter.

Therefore, poetry can do both these things. Poets perceive with their delicate feelings. They become both excited and sad and thus they compose. This composition originates from poets' sense of excitement, melancholy and perception of those things that others do not see. Well, this has two sides in it: one is that it can lead people towards good deeds and another is that it can act in the opposite way. (July 1, 2015) This is what an artist does … he discovers and gives prominence to the beauties and delicacies and realities that are invisible to inartistic eyes and shows them to others. When I say beauty, it does not mean that an artist is not able to discover and highlight ugliness. He can do so, since ugliness is also among delicacies. (June 13, 2006) In many parts of the world, spiritual assets are evaluated in terms of how much money their scientific or artistic capabilities can bring in.

However, from an Islamic perspective, spiritual assets possess a great intrinsic value. In other words, from an Islamic and spiritual perspective, the artist's gift is itself a value—even if no one recognizes the artist's work and no one ever benefits from it. Simply possessing this artistic gift is, in and of itself, a virtue. The fact that a person is endowed with artistic talent should be regarded as something inherently valuable—even if no one is aware of it, even if it never brings financial reward, and even if, in a marketplace dominated by narrow-mindedness, it finds no real audience. This is a truly admirable culture. It is precisely the kind of outlook that can foster the growth of knowledge, research, and art in the country, and it is something we genuinely need. We must not operate under the misconception that our pursuit of art or knowledge is driven solely by material compensation, such that if we fail to secure it here, we should simply seek it elsewhere... That is not the spirit of Islamic and religious culture. (May 4, 2005) The power of influence that exists in poetry brings about certain responsibilities.

Generally speaking, all objects, all individuals and all phenomena that have a higher status, have a higher responsibility as well. Therefore, poetry brings about responsibility and commitment due to this power of influence. Poetry has a commitment. What is this commitment? It is putting oneself at the service of the divine enlightenment movement throughout the history of humanity. There have been two movements throughout history: the movement of clarity and the movement of deception or the movement of guidance, and the movement of deviation and aberration: [We sent aforetime our apostles with clear signs] [The Holy Quran, 57: 25]. This is one movement throughout history and [Then, by Your power, I will put them all in the wrong] [The Holy Quran, 38: 82]. This is what Satan has said and this is another movement. The duty of poetry is to be at the service of the first movement. And the reason is clear: this has been given by God. It belongs to God and it is a divine blessing. We are the servants of God. So, we should utilize all His blessings at the service of the orientation of nubuwwat and divine guidance. (May 20, 2019) I hope that the true value of art will first be recognized by artists themselves, and that they will come to appreciate and honor the priceless gift they carry within. To honor it is to dedicate it to a worthy cause... Art constitutes a part of the most sublime and invaluable dimensions of the human soul. It should be cherished accordingly and dedicated to the service of God. (July 23, 2001)
