The Origin of Missteps: Understanding the Roots of Disobedience

Hadith of the Day is a daily feature highlighting timeless sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the Ahlul-Bayt (pbut), offering insights into faith, ethics, and spirituality for contemporary life.

Hawzah News Agency- Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Saffar, who narrated from al-Abbas ibn Ma'ruf, from Bakr ibn Muhammad, from Abu Basir, from Imam Sadiq (pbuh) that he said:

The roots of disbelief are three: Greed, Arrogance, and Envy.

As for Greed: It was Adam, when he was forbidden from the tree, his greed compelled him to eat from it.

As for Arrogance: It was Iblis (Satan), when he was commanded to prostrate to Adam, but he refused.

As for Envy: It was the two sons of Adam (Cain and Abel), when one of them killed his brother out of envy.
